The Shopping Center of the Year in Finland 2010: Sello!

The shopping center Sello in Espoo was chosen as the Shopping Center of the Year 2010. Sello became no. 1 in the competition with its ”The most ecological shopping center in Finland”- achievement for its ecological factors as well as its interaction with the inhabitants of the area.

Sello is a diverse city center of the Leppävaara region, and as the first European shopping center it has received the LEED-environment certificate at the gold level.

Environment- and energy efficiency values have directed the business in Sello, from the planning phase and onwards. The shopping center is situated in the center of the region Leppävaara and it’s easy to go there by foot, bike, train, buss or car. A hotel, concert hall, library etc. are run in the diverse shopping center, and nearby there are plenty of places to live as well.

The ”ecologity” in Sello is not anything that only has been left behind in the planning phase or the LEED-certificate, but it has also been well implemented in the daily business: in the company- and interest group cooperation, as well as in the consciousness of the consumers.

Maisa Romanainen, Director at Stockmann Oy and member of the jury is thanking Sello’s campaign for its interactivity:”The jury became delighted with the innovative way, that the shopping center has advanced the eco-efficient procedure all-round with its goals, business and campaign messages, and this together with the customers, the staff of the shops as well as with other interest groups”.

The shopping center of the year competition was arranged for the second time.

In the shopping center of the year competition participated nine shopping centers, which all made some kind of a remarkable shopping center achievement.

Those who got to the finale, in addition to Sello, were the shopping center Iso Omena’s ”Large toy collection” and shopping center Jyväskylän Forumi’s ”Happy renovation”. These campaigns were as well aimed directly to the inhabitants of the neighbouring area, emphasizing the role of the shopping center as a diverse service- and happening place of the community.

The shopping center of the year competition is arranged by the Finnish Shopping Center Association. The winner was chosen by a jury, consisting of Marko Pakkinen from Seedi Oy, Maisa Romanainen from Stockmann Oy and Marianne Heikkilä from Marttaliitto Oy. The criterions for the choice was a shopping center achievement, which is remarkable, innovative and environmentally friendly. In addition, the management of the shopping center, and its success, were judged as well.
